Framing a Wall

Basic Principals:

First a wall is assembled by "studs" each stud may have different heights.

Every wall consists on the following:

  • Bottom plate:
Always use pressure treated lumber for bottom plates.
Tip:  Make sure that the preasure threated lumber that you are buying is as "fresh" as possible.  If you use dry lumber, it will split easier when you are nailing all the studs.

  • Studs:
Studs are separated as a rule every 16" on center or "O.C"  this rule is typical throughout construction.
Use 2 nails side by side per stud when you are nailing them.  Be sure you put each nail parallel to each other to keep the lumber  from twisting.

  • Fire blocks
fire blocks are usually placed at 48" of the floor center if the wall is only 8' tall.
try to install the fireblocks while the wall is still on the floor, this will add strenght to the wall when you are ready to lift it.
Tip: I personally like to add at least 2 more block in the door frames to add streight.

Top Plate:
Usually consisting in (2) 2x4 for bearing walls (supporting walls) or (1) 2x4 with (1) 1x4 for non-bearing walls.
Use the 20' 2x4 whenever is possible.
Make sure to not match the splices on both top plates.
