Soil Types:
Soil types are tested and rated according to their ability to support loads. See table below.

Soft clay or silt | do not build |
Medium clay or silt | 1500 - 2200 |
Stiff clay or silt | 2200 - 2500 |
Loose sand | 1800 - 2000 |
Dense sand | 2000 - 3000 |
Gravel | 2500 - 3000 |
Bedrock | 4000 and up |
You will most likely need to compact the soil before footings are placed. Consult a soil engineer if the stability of the soil at the building site is unknown.
